I really like the way Wikipedia defines web design: “Web design is a broad term used to encompass the way that content is delivered to an end-user through the World Wide Web…”. And we have to say that web design is really all about the way you deliver content, so taking good care of shaping your website is something that’s very important. Websites are pretty much based on grids and columns, where geometrical forms are the main elements. Here we will show you some examples of how circles, squares, rectangles and triangles are used to better create beautiful and inspiring websites.

It seems that jQuery plugins are constantly being released, and it’s no surprise since it’s insanely popular, and for good reason. The only problem is being able to sort through them all to find the good ones. That’s why we’re always on the lookout, and we’ve found some good ones for you. Here are 10 fresh jQuery plugins that you should find useful.

arbor.js

Arbor is a graph visualization library built with web workers and jQuery. Rather than trying to be an all-encompassing framework, arbor provides an efficient, force-directed layout algorithm plus abstractions for graph organization and screen refresh handling.

Mobily Map

MobilyMap is a jQuery plugin (7KB) that can create a Google Maps-like, draggable interface from any image.

Awkward Viewline

This is a simple plugin for displaying any type of media on a straight line. As an example it can be used for displaying a product line over the browsers entire width.

liteAccordion

Minimal fonts can awesomely enhance any artwork if used properly. You can see more and more websites using minimal fonts in their designs. Personally I love the neat look of bold minimal font in a minimal design. In this article you’re going to find some tips together with stunning examples to learn more about minimal font usage in web design. While minimalism seems easy – it really isn’t, it takes great skill to come up with something clean, professional and unique at the same time! Let’s jump into art of minimal fonts?

Bigger Is Better

Since minimal fonts are rather slight you’ll have to use bigger font sizes in order to make your text visible and easy to read. Try to avoid using a font size lower than 14 points. Big and bold minimal serif fonts usually look awesome in headers and plain backgrounds. Large minimal headlines add an interactive look and accent to minimal designs.

Fajne Chlopaki uses huge headlines in his website’s header. The site has a clean and minimal style and these large fonts add a creative look to, and complete, the design.

Contrast

If you’re using minimal fonts be sure not to lose contrast. Try to implement light fonts on a dark background or vice versa. Stronger contrast will make your text easier to read since minimal fonts tend to blend into the background if the contrast is to low. Strong contrast will also enhance the whole look and make the fonts really stand out.

The Visualbox site has a dark background and they’re using white fonts for titles. They’re also using a large font size so the text is very noticeable. These minimal style titles also add a little accent to the design.

Keep It Minimal

Minimal fonts are for minimal usage. They’re neat when used sparingly and in the right situation, though they can look unrefined and clash if you clutter them and use inappropriately. Minimal fonts won’t look good in visually heavy designs. Less is more – they will look great in minimal designs with a lot of white space and few details.

Oliver James Cosling’s portfolio has a clean and minimal look. He’s using a large minimal font for the title and a smaller one for navigation. These fonts look strong and neat and they complement the design excellently.

Limit Your Fonts

Different type of fonts tend to conflict with each other and create a mess within your design. It’s especially true when talking about minimal fonts. Accurate use of fonts can add the right flair and character to your design. Using a select few however will help maintain a consistent look. Two to three fonts is usually good, of course, you can use more however you’ll have to be careful that they don’t cause visual noise.

Adoreyou is an excellent example of effective use of minimal fonts. The site itself is a consistent, well-designed minimal style website. They’re using one minimal font for navigation and another one for the titles. The fonts are perfectly implemented into the design, they’re suitable and engaging at the same time.

Following trends is a part of many creators in all creative mediums: design, fashion, music, film, whatever. It’s only natural: you see what people want, then you give it to them. What’s the problem, you might ask?

Well, that system, while fine for short-term gains and immediate profits, is fundamentally broken. In fact, there are 5 reasons why you shouldn’t create ‘flavor-of-the-week’ designs.

By choosing to instead hone in on and dominate your own style – even while following trends – you’ll set yourself up for long-term benefits:

More profit

Less unnecessary work

An identifiable brand

Clients coming to you

A more meaningful impact to the world

Again, you could even be following trends, as long as you’re conscious that it isn’t the most viable long-term strategy for your design career and instead focus on honing in and dominating your own style. You get your needed short-term benefits while building your foundation for a butt-kicking and long-lasting design career.

So read on to find out 5 reasons why you shouldn’t create trendy designs:

Top 5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Create Trendy Designs

1. Your work will become dated

This one is pretty obvious. Trends come and go, so any work you create that follows a trend will automatically become dated years later. That glossy, reflective web 2.0-style website? Dated years later. An Apple-aping mobile app interface? Dated years later. You get the picture.

Now granted, this isn’t as critical for client-based work, where they specifically request a style and the work would’ve been one-off anyway. But for passive income generators – selling themes, icons, graphics, creating a store, and so forth – this is a problem, because…

2. You’ll make unnecessary work for yourself

This is an extension of #1. Because your design work’s lifespan is automatically shortened due to it being of the time and not timeless, you’ll have to constantly follow trends, see what’s hot, reinvent your style, learn new techniques that you may not be into, and on top of that create new designs to replace the outdated unhip ones.

Plus, any themes, icons, and graphics that you designed for passive income selling will become outdated and unprofitable. So you’ll have to constantly design new of-the-moment stuff to replace your outdated designs – instead of adding to still-profitable timeless designs and increasing your long-term profits.

So basically: lots of busywork. Time that could otherwise be spent just creating new designs and further pushing your own style that you’re dominating.

Even for client work many of those tasks would apply. Rather than clients wanting your own style, you’ll need to constantly research the latest and trendiest styles – and then go and pursue clients.

3. Clients won’t necessarily come to you

As mentioned, since you don’t have your own desirable style but instead are creating in whatever the current trendy style is, you’ll have to do more work finding clients. Clients won’t come to you since you won’t have as unique and desirable a style and ethos.

After all, if you’re creating designs that are in the same current style as every other designer out there, what separates you from them? Why would a client choose you over them, much less independently seek out your non-existent unique style?

4. No identifiable brand will be established

These reasons just keep feeding into each other: this is an extension of #3. The reason why clients won’t come to you is that, by only creating trendy designs, you don’t have an identifiable brand. You are creating in the style that all the other designers are creating in, after all.

Not having an identifiable brand isn’t just a sexy thing. Sure, everyone wants to have their own brand and unique identity established – it’s cool and it attracts members of the opposite sex. No, having an identifiable brand established is also important from a business standpoint. Why would someone choose a Nike shoe over, say, a Reebok? Because the brand resonates with them more, or the Nike brand screams #1 and champion more than Reebok.

It’s no different for designers: the reason a client might choose designer A over designer B is because the brand is more attractive, more cool, more unique, and associated with the right clients. Just look at any of your favorite designers and design firms – web, visual, and otherwise. It’s very likely the reason you like them is because of their unique style and ethos, not because they create trendy designs just like everyone else.

So dominating your own style and establishing your unique identifiable brand is what gets clients finding and coming to you. And you don’t get that by only creating trendy designs and not separating yourself at all from other designers.

5. You won’t make as world-changing of an impact

This is less tangible a reason but perhaps the most important one. By simply following trends, what kind of a impact are you creating in the world? Forget the design community and clients, think bigger: are you making as world-changing a dent in this world as you can by limiting yourself to creating trendy designs? In the style that all the other designers are also creating in.

The world doesn’t need more me-too’s. People want something fresh, unique, positive, life-improving. A design can do that for a client, if it’s fresh, unique, positive, and life-improving enough. And you get that by dominating your own style and then offering your unique contribution to them – not by simply creating a trendy design that other designers are also offering.

Why You Shouldn’t Create Trendy Designs

Yes, creating trendy designs can get you short-term benefits: clients, sales, profits. But as these 5 reasons have hopefully shown, it’s not the best long-term strategy. A much more viable path is to hone in on and dominate your own style. You could even be doing that while creating trendy designs – hey, we all have to pay the bills after all. As long as you remain conscious of the fact that it’s not as viable long-term as dominating your own style and creating more profit, getting clients to come to you, and making a more meaningful impact to the world.

I agree that following trends just because it’s trendy is bad. But in your article, nowhere you mention the importance of the clients needs. The designer job is to make the bridge between the company and his customers, and a designer can’t just sit down and do as an artist, and wait for client who like his style to comes. At least, not the majority and not at the beginnning of your career. When a company like Nike pays you millions, you put your style aside and do as they want.

Typically your design should be configured to suit the needs of the client brief. Trends can be fit into that solution but all of your justification should come from research post analysis of the brief.

The user presses “l” and a toolbar appears at the top of the page then they start typing to search for the link that they want and a list appears of those links, they can then select a link by moving up and down keys and whilst doing so the focused link will be scrolled into view and highlighted, here’s a demo page which should fill in all the blanks.

The Hijax plugin is a JQuery plugin which allows you to add Ajax capabilities to your site, while maintaining search engine friendliness and browser history button support. It provides a simple and easy way to transform your site into a dynamic Ajax site, providing a richer user experience.

21. JAWS: News Ticker and Mini Accordion

This widget-esque script is at once both a news ticker and a mini accordion. It takes a config file of data (headlines, image SRCs, URLs etc) and paginates your headlines into folds. It will optionally auto-rotate through these folds, though you can navigate between them with the numeric tabs at the top right. If an item has ‘more info’ data set in the config, then clicking the headline will reveal that data in an accordion fashion. See below for an example.

22. Subway Map Visualization jQuery Plugin

This plugin renders unordered lists into a subway map similar in style to the London Underground map. It emphasizes a clean, aesthetic look with curves and proper placement of markers for stations and interchanges. Without any illustration tools, you can quickly go from HTML markup to a complete map visualization of information in a short amount of time. The rendering uses the HTML5 element and works with any browser that supports this element.

23. Sticky Section Headers

Given the appropriate mark-up structure this plugin keeps headers in place while scrolling, known from the iPhone table view.

The jQuery headerlinks plugin will automatically create a table of contents block anywhere on the page with any style and any content you desire. It has a tremendous amount of flexibility and does many things automatically.

25. WZSplitter

WZSplitter is a flexible, easy to use layout plugin. It helps end users to set up any combination of resizable panels just by providing a few configuration values. Main features:

Resizable panels, collapsing/expanding and stretching/shrinking functions.

26. Autobrowse Endless Scroller

When run on a DOM element, this plugin will make the element grow and fill its content automatically when the user scrolls to the bottom of the element. The content is fetched via ajax, and the plugin keeps a cache using local storage.

27. Panoscoper

The Panoscoper plugin is made to take any object (including embedded video objects) and wrap them as though they were 360° virtual environments. It has extensive options and can be customized to suit most applications, but is still being heavily developed.

28. jCrumb

JCrumb is a JQuery plugin for instantly adding breadcrumbs to any webpage without the need to worry about sitemaps, or server side languages. Just add the plugin to every page you want breadcrumbs on, initialize, and you’re done. Can be also be styled with JQuery UI.

29. jxSlider

jxSlider widget turns the selected DIV into a small embedded ajax tabbed-navigator. The ajax-loaded content will automatically and recursively be shown into the initial DIV.

With jQuery Scroller you can create easily smart scrolling text, news ticker, or image animations with few lines of code in jQuery!

39. Memu – A simple CSS / JavaScript / JQuery Menu

A small, solid jQuery plugin which is quite easy to use. It’s a menu which can be used with or without JQuery. What’s special about this script is the included plugin jstorage.js (which is some amazing work btw) to store the current item. So if you’re navigating around, the selected item will stay highlighted. This will spare you some server-side code. You can try this one by clicking on the menu item “File -> New”.

40. Dropp

Dropp is a jQuery plugin which replaces regular dropdown menus ( <select> elements ) with alternatives you can style.

41. Pretty Pie Menu

Right-Click on the selected element, hold the button down, pie menu appears and select icon.Uses jQueryUI animations, icons and styles to make it “pretty”. Easily modifiable by changing jQueryUI stylesheets.

42. jMenu

jMenu is a jQuery plugin that enables us to create horizontal navigations with unlimited sub-menus. Besides jQuery, it also requires jQuery UI and supports all the effects of this library (like fadeIn or slideDown). The markup of the menu is pretty clean as it makes use of nested lists. The look and feel of the output is set in a CSS file so updating it without touching the JS code is possible.

43. Facebook Menu System

This menu is based on the same idea used on Facebook. The menu system work only with the UL html tag, no other tags are used, you have only to create a simple menu.

jOrbital is a solution for building circular menus. It’s purpose is to group elements with similar functionality ( like social buttons ) into one hoverable button. But it’s not limited to simple menu only. You can create circular gallery, multi-level navigation or RPG -like menu. This is a premium plugin though.

47. Multi Row Checkbox Menu

Plugin to put those cool little Google Gmail type ‘Select All/Select None’ action menus at the top of a list of check boxes.

50. jQuery Configurable Context Menu

This is a configurable context menu, it works in three ways: right click, hold down, hover.Callback is executed with parameter e, the menu action event object normalized by jQuery, and el, the element associated with the menu. Menu is an ul with position absolute, menu element are li with .hover class added on mouse over.

NavDock is a simple dock style menu icon.

52. jQuery Content Panel Switcher

The jQuery Content Panel Switcher is a simple, very lightweight jQuery plugin that allows smooth transitioning of content in and out of panels located anywhere on the page. You can have single or multiple content switching panels on a single page Content panels can be either span or div elements, and the buttons used to switch the content can be just about anything, so long as they have the right clases assigned.

jQuery Image Rotator is a plugin for jQuery, and it is a highly customizable JavaScript-based way to easily turn your images into a collection viewable as a slideshow, with great looking fading effects, if desired.

jQCloud allows you to build neat cloud-shaped word clouds and tag clouds. Since this plugin produces pure HTML code, the word cloud layout can be easily personalized with custom CSS styles.

Our close friend and highly reputed designer Nick La has released numerous Free themes on his site N.Design Studio. One of those theme was known as iTheme, a free Mac OS-like theme. With the launch of their new WordPress theme company, Themify, they have decided to convert iTheme into iTheme2 which runs on the elegant Themify framework. The best part about it is that it is FREE. It is the perfect theme for technology related blogs. This theme uses media queries to target different displays such as desktop, netbook, iPhone, iPad, and other mobile devices (no plugin is necessary!). You get 3 color skins of the theme, 3 single post layout, feature slider, and 5 widget ready footer display options.

As you see in the above image, it shows the 3 different views from 3 different devices. The layout automatically adjusts base on the viewing area. So for smaller devices like Netbooks or mobile phones, it automatically adjusts. There is a featured slider that is easy to manage from the theme backend.
